Chapter 1 - In the Background

It had taken Bette many sleepless nights to come to terms with the hate she felt from Tina the night of Danas Bachelorette party. That was the night that Bette knew in her heart Tina would never give her a second chance that she had been hoping against hope Tina would extend her. This realization set Bette on a path that would become the seeds of the plan before her today. Bette had no choice but to accept that Tina was moving on and she was not to be in her life. To help facilitate this, Bette had quickly acquiesced to every demand from Tinas lawyer and adding a few lines of her own. She granted Tina ownership of their home, full child support for the first 18 years of the childs life, half of her 401K up until this point in time, half of all their investments and half of all the art work they had accumulated during their time together.

With this agreement complete, Bette had moved on. Well at least she tried. Physically she moved into a stylish apartment which came already furnished. Bette wanted to leave her options open and not get committed to any location as she felt she might just want to leave LA. The funny part was by staying at the CAC, it afforded her the opportunity to at least hear about Tina and her life, even if it was only through Helena. At first this was like rubbing salt in an open wound, but after a while it became the reason to stay at the CAC. In all truth, Bette would never care about her work in the same driven way again. It had cost her too dearly. The price for her unrelenting drive for success had been Tina and after paying that price the trophy of success just didnt have the same luster.

Bette knew Tina was close to her due date. Bette had been listening for days as Helena went on and on about Tinas uncomfort with how large she had become and how despite her size Tina was such a force in bed. The call finally came during a meeting between Franklin, Helena and herself. James came barging through the conference room door, out of breath, all excited, Tinas on her way to the hospital, she just called. Helena looked directly at Bette with the patented Helena smirk I believe that would be for me. and excused herself, leaving Bette to look on as she gathered up her papers and stuffed her briefcase chatting about Tina and the coming baby. When Helena had packed all her items she left. Turning to Franklin Bette also excused herself without saying another word to him. At that point Bette cant really say how she got to the hospital. Pulling into the parking deck Bette didnt really have a plan. She just knew she needed to be present in some capacity. As Bette got close to the Maturity Area she spotted the gang of girls sitting in the waiting area. Not wanting to intrude, Bette hung back she didnt belong with them anymore. I need to be in there with Tina. This thought was foremost in Bettes mind but she also knew that she had traded away her right to be there for a cheap, meaningless encounter with Candace.

At that moment fate intervened on Bettes behalf, from around the corner came Dr. Wilson. Spotting Bette she stopped and paused, looking Bette up and down hard. Coming to a decision, Dr. Wilson approaches Bette and leads her through the staff entrance to the Birthing suites. Pulling Bette into an area where they can talk unheard, Bette what is your intention for being here? Dr. Wilson asks directly of Bette as there was little time for niceties.

I just need to see is all Bette can get out. It was the only words that came to Bettes mind.

Do you intend on making a scene? Dr. Wilson asks still starring directly at Bette.

No . NO I just need to see Bette repeats in a lost little voice.

Dr. Wilson looks at her hard and then comes to her final decision. Dont make me regret my decision here. I could loose my license with this stunt. I will let you in but you must stay in the background and not say a word. Can you do that Bette stay in the background? Not say a word or make a sound?

Bette doesnt trust herself to say anything that maybe her luck will not hold so she just nods her head to illustrate that she could be trusted to not make a sound.

OK Bette, I will let you in but dont make me ever regret my action here And with that Dr. Wilson went to one of the nurses in the area and explained what Bettes function in the delivery suite would be. If she even makes a peep noise you have my permission to throw her out on her ear. Dr. Wilson said loud enough for Bette to hear as a way of a final warning.

The nurse just smiled sympathetically to Bette and gave her instructions on how to get all gowned up, dressing from head to toe. The nurse then had Bette hang back until Tina was well into her delivery. Entering the suite, Bette could see Tina in the center of the room. She was on the bed with her legs up and spread. Helena was at her side trying to help her with her Lamaze breathing. Apparently Helena hadnt attended enough classes to effectively help Tina and was trying to get a nurse to take over.
Tina, darling this charming nurse is going to help you here, arent you? Helena says as she tries to get Tina to let go of her hand and with Helenas other hand she is pulling the nurse closer to Tinas side. Helena has that panic look in her eyes as if this whole experience is just a little too much on the real side for her comfort.

Bettes thoughts are immediately for her poor Tina to be stuck with such a cowardly smuck at this moment. There were two other nurses along with Dr. Wilson attending to Tinas delivery. With everyone focused on Tina and the progression of the delivery, Bette was able to slip into the room. The fact that Bette was standing in the back of the room was lost on all the participants other than Dr. Wilson and the nurse giving Bette instructions. As Bette watched she marveled at Tina and the way she handled the whole process. Despite the lack of help from her coach, Tina was hanging in there well. The contractions where beginning to come one on top of the other and Tina was beginning to look exhausted. With every moan that escaped from Tina, Bette wanted to go to her side. At one point Bettes instructional nurse tugged on Bette gown as Bette had unconsciously moved in Tinas direction. Bette had already had her mask partially in her mouth to keep her quiet.
OK Tina youre doing a great job, were almost there just one more BIG push when I tell you. OK Tina wait wait Dr. Wilson instructs.
Tina was panting now looking as if she needed a break from this whole process for a moment but before she could even catch her breath her contraction started again.
Now Tina NOW Push NOW. Dr. Wilson instructs again.
Knowing it was coming but still being caught off guard Tina screamed in pain. As she started this push it could be distinctly heard as Tina screamed BBBBBBBEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEE with all her might as she began her last contraction.

It took all of the self control that Bette had not to run to Tinas side at that moment. This baby really was hers and Tinas. No matter what Tina had said in the past when the moment was here, Tina heart spoke to Bette and she was here to hear.

Bette felt torn and the indecisiveness made her stay rooted to her spot as the baby made its presence know. The babys appearance changed the focus away form any thought of what Tina had screamed to the happy appearance of Tinas brand new baby girl. Bette had tears in her eyes as she heard the babys first little cough and then a healthy wail. Her tiny little perfect features could be seen as the nurses began wiping her off and holding her up for Tina to see. The baby girl was beautiful, already having a head of dark hair and a beautiful mocha skin tone. As Tina was handed her baby, Bette could see the tears of joy in Tinas eyes. Once again Bette wanted desperately to go to Tinas side, to share this precious moment but she knew that she had forfeited that joy. She was now the outsider, the silent one in the corner watching. Just at that moment her nurse friend tugged on Bettes sleeve and motioned it was time for Bette to leave. As the nurse was pulling Bette from the room, she took one more look over her shoulder.
