Jackson was feeling better a couple of days later and we took the rest of vacation to relax at home. We received Jackson's new bedroom set and we put everything together. He had insisted he wanted green walls with dinosaurs painted on them. As his room came together, Tina and I often discussed how we should explain why him and his momma have come to live with me.
Tina was making us some dinner while Jackson and I sat at the table with our pencils, drawing. I was impressed with his drawings, he was a very creative three almost four year old. After a while he stopped drawing and dropped his pencil. He stared at me for a while and I looked at him and smiled. He smiled back and patted my hand.
"What's up buddy?"
"Can I ask you a question B?"
"Of course buddy," I said and concentrating on him.
"Are you gonna be my new mommy?"
"Um..I..why do you ask," I said, looking to Tina who was deep into cooking and listening to her ipod.
"My daddy has a new lady living at his house. She went camping with us. She's a stupid lady," he said pouting a bit.
"Don't say that dude," I said as I finally caught Tina's attention, and she walked over.
"She is, she's a nurse and she's stupid."
"Baby, don't be ugly," Tina chastised, "who are we talking about."
"The lady who lives with daddy," Jackson answered before I could say anything.
"What," Tina asks, and I shake my head.
"Momma is B gonna be my new mommy?"
"Do you want her to be your new mommy," Tina asks, sitting.
"Why? Don't you think mommy should get a new daddy?"
"Um," he says looking at both of us, "um, I don't know. Um, Jake at school, he's my best friend, he likes to draw too. He's got two mommies and his two mommies are nice, they bring us cookies and juice. And I saw you kiss B and Jake's mommies kiss too."
"Oh really bud," Tina asks and he shakes his head. Both Tina and I blush, we'd thought we'd been sneaky, "who is this lady that lives with daddy?"
"This lady, she's mean and ugly. I don't like her," he said going back to drawing.
"You don't remember her name?"
"Um, daddy called her sweet cheeks, that is a very silly name. Right B," he asked me and I widened my eyes, "stupid name, stupid lady."
"Jackson, quit saying that word. Why do you keep saying it?"
"Cause, that lady says it. She is mean momma, she don't like you. She said mean things and I told daddy. But daddy says it's ok. They also say bad words, but I don't say, it's baaaaad."
"Alright buddy, we'll talk more later. Let B put a movie on while I finish dinner."
As I put Jackson's movie in, I hear Tina slamming things around in the kitchen.
