Tina pulled her SUV up to Bette’s house, biting her lip with the anxiety she felt. She desperately wanted to be perfect for the brunette, even knowing how silly that was.
No one’s perfect. Don’t be ridiculous. What’s that horribly cliché saying? … Just be yourself. “Whoo …” Just be yourself.
With dark jeans on and a black, long-sleeved shirt, Tina felt warm even in the chilly evening air. She nervously made her way up to Bette’s door, and rang for her. And as she was waiting for the woman she was convinced was far superior, she tugged at the bottom of the tight-fitting shirt.
The door opened unexpectedly, but Tina just looked up into Bette’s eyes – their connection immediate. She couldn’t help but smile, even amidst her nerves. “Hi.”
“Wow,” Bette smiled back, beaming at the look of the blond. “Your hair … it’s curly.” She pointed to the waves that flipped and held their bouncy shape. “Wow, you look … great.”
Tina thought she was a joke standing next to Bette – the thinner heartthrob dressed in business attire. A pencil skirt and blouse. “You … you look really beautiful.”
Bette cleared her throat and picked up her purse to lock the door behind her to get a start on their date while the night was still young. She looked up at Tina again as they walked back to her SUV.
“You said you were gonna pick the place?”
Bette nodded, “I already have picked the place.”
“Oh no,” Tina chuckled, walking with Bette to her side of the vehicle. “Am I completely under-dressed?”
In amusement, Bette watched Tina open the door for her. “That’s awfully courteous of you.” She ducked inside and straightened out her skirt so Tina could close the door for her.
“What – people don’t do that anymore?” Tina chuckled as she got in on her side, turning on the car and adjusting the heat. “I can’t have been out of the game for that long.”
Bette laughed as they started on their way, just watching her date beautiful, surprising date. “You know … you’re the classiest woman I’ve ever met.”
Tina glanced over at her, worried for a moment.
“And it’s a turn on,” Bette assured, trying to distract herself from the way Tina looked when she drove. The relaxed posture, the hand in her lap. “I would … love to treat you just like this myself. And I hope I’ve been just as lady-like.”
Tina just smiled, “You have.”
The rest of their conversation was just as teasing and pleasant before they’d arrived at the destination – Le Bernardin’s.
“I take it you’ve heard of it before?”
Tina let out a sigh of laughter. “I have, but … it’s so expensive, I’ve just never been … I can’t believe you’ve led me here …”
Bette admired her when she wasn’t looking, wanting to sweep the soft blond hair away and kiss her neck. “I think you’ll love it.”
“I think … I am under-dressed!” Tina teased, shrugging with an adorable smile as she turned the car off. “Oh, don’t jump out! I wanna get your door.” She hurried to the other side of the car and Bette just shook her head – taking Tina’s hand as she stepped out, insisting that it wasn’t necessary. “With you in those heels?
