fuck.” Tina bit her lip and her eyes pooled. “Okay....tell me what you know.”
Dana nodded her head vigorously, relieved to have the hard part behind her.
“I found the lump last weekend. I never noticed it before so I don’t know now long I’ve had it but the doctor said it’s a pretty aggressive cancer that began in the milk ducts...” Dana took a breath, “an infiltrating ductal carcinoma,’ she repeated from memory.
Tina stared back her aghast.
The brunette shrugged, “I know. It’s already spread to my muscle tissue.”
Tina opened and closed her mouth before speaking.
“I can’t fucking believe this Dana. What now?” Her voice was soft but ragged.
“I’m having a mastectomy on Monday,” Dana told her.
“That’s one good thing about being a professional tennis player... I get pretty good service,” she piped nervously.
Tina offered back the same wary smile before leaning in to give her friend a bear hug.

The short drive to Sam’s condo was quiet. Sam could tell that Tina had been thrown by running into her ex and then flying across country with her. She was trying to give Tina some space to collect her thoughts. Tessa meanwhile was watching Tina’s expressions through the rearview mirror and drawing her own conclusions.
Oblivious to Tessa’s observations, Tina was in fact aware of Sam beside her. She hoped she didn’t appear too preoccupied with her ex-wife’s emergence but she couldn’t help it.
“Seriously, what the fuck? Did the last eight hours or so really just happen? And did I really and truly just drop Bette off at Helena fucking Peabody’s house for the night? And Tessa! Tessa did NOT just hit on my ex-wife right in front of me, right?” She turned around to give Tessa a look and found her smiling sweetly at her.
Tina gave her an exasperated look, but bit back what ever she had planned to say. She turned back around in her seat and adjusted her sunglasses.
“You didn’t mind me giving Bette my phone number, did you? Kind of late to be asking I realize, but damn that woman is sexy and honestly, I could use some ‘sexy’ about now.” Tessa had ended a three-year relationship a few months earlier.
“Besides, I don’t want to be a 3rd wheel around you two all weekend, right? I thought she looked like fun, maybe even a prospect to take to Fire Island for the party?”
Tina choked audibly. “Tessa. Bette’s here for a meeting and an art opening, she’ll be back on the West Coast by tomorrow night.”
“An Art Opening? Whose gallery?
