Bette looked at the information in the envelope from the attorney. It really was not very informative. She decides to make the call and find out what this was all about.
She dialed the number on the letter from the attorney.
“Hello, LeCroix, Hendersen and Wells.” The voice on the phone was Cajun, southern and sweet.
“Mr. LeCroix, please.”
“May I tell Mr. LeCroix who is asking for him?”
“Bette Porter. This concerns Agnes Tilleson.”
“Just a moment Miss Porter.” The woman’s voice was reminiscent of her Aunt Agnes. She had not heard the soulful, sweet , Cajun accent for so long. Aunt Agnes had married a French businessman and they had settled in Louisiana for his business. He had died several years ago and with everyone’s busy lives, she had long ago lost touch with her fathers sister.
A strong, confident voice, “Miss Porter, it is so nice of you to call. How may I help you?”
“Mr. LeCroix, I am calling concerning Agnes Tilleson and her estate.”
“Yes my dear. I have been the Tilleson’s attorney for many years. Robert, your uncle, rest his soul, and I attended college together and I have known and attended to Agnes’s legal affairs since his untimely death.”
“Yes, well I need some information concerning the reading of her will. As I understand it, my sister Kit and I have been requested to attend the reading of the will on the 28th in your office. I was wondering if you might give me a bit more information.” Bette is lulled by the tenor of this man’s voice but she wants answers. It would be very easy to hear him just say words and then acquiesce to his request.
“Agnes Tilleson has personal as well as real property which has been willed to both you, your sister and one other person.”
“Can you tell me what the property is? More importantly, who is the other person? Kit and I are not aware of any other living relatives. She had no children and she never remarried that we are aware of.”
“Miss Porter, as I am sure you can understand, I am not at liberty to share with you anything concerning the contents of the will prior to the official reading. Nor I am at liberty to share the name of other beneficiaries prior to that time.”
“What if we do not come to the reading?” Bette was a bit sarcastic and her tone was flippant.
“The entire estate would then be inherited by the attending heir in accordance with the amendments based on the reading requirements.”
“So this un-named person, not related to my father’s sister would inherit the entire estate?”
“That would be correct Miss Porter. And, that would be a most unfortunate happening, as Agnes was very clear in her will who she wanted to have what.”
“I see. Well, if it is required that we be there, I guess we will be there.” Bette was intrigued and angry now. “What would be suitable accommodations near by?”
“Might I suggest that you stay in your Aunt’s home.
