My mom, picking flowers at her garden.”  They pulled up to a country house with a gravel driveway that had an old willow tree.  Some grass at the front, but mostly was natures grass/weeds.  Tina’s mom was chasing off a dog pestering her, it was a sight to see.  There was a red tile house, one story, with a modern look of California homes.  It looked well lived and homey.  Tina’s mom was waving at them as they had pulled up.  Her mom was squinting trying to see who was driving.  She had on her gloves and began to walk towards their car.  Bette rolled the window down.

“Hi, we are going to park really quick!” Tina leaned over quickly and her hand had stayed on Bette’s leg.  Tina looked over reassuringly and saying I love you quietly.  “T, just relax.  You are making me nervous!”  Tina gave her a quick peck and hoped out of the car.

“Hi Mom!  So good to see you..oooo”  Tina jumped out and hugged her mom

“Hey Tina, well..your dad as usual is out with the dogs getting some wood to make some new bowls for the family.  A salad set is what you were talking about?”  Tina smiled at her mom as Bette had made her way over.  Bette was right to wear jeans and not slacks.  She thought, ‘shit so much dirt, glad I was casual and not swanky Bette.’  Bette nervously stood next to Tina.

“Mom, um, well, this is Bette Porter…my girlfriend.”  Tina had thought and well thought how to tell her family and it figures they were out and about.  She thought. ‘What the hell, they love me, what is the difference.  I love Bette and so will they.’  Tina looked over at her mom’s shock, at first she thought well right her friend is a girl and then she saw how Tina’s hand was around her waist.

“Oh!  Tina!  Excuse us Bette.”  Jean Kennard had a look on her face of embarrassment and fury all at once.

“Mom, wait, please…”  Tina followed her mom around the bend of the house and put her hands on her head and looked at Bette with fear.  Bette shrugged, she wasn’t sure if it was a bad or good sign.  Bette just stood there and was greeted by three large dogs.

“Christina Kennard!  You know better to may be give me a heads up.  For christ’s sake.  You have embarrassed me.  I am caught of guard and all I can say, is that…well, Bette is quite striking?  I had no idea sweetie and if you are happy, that is all that matters.”  Tina was perplexed and confused and looked it.

“Wha?”

“Tina, relax, it isn’t something that is new to us to hear.  I didn’t think it of you and well…I am shocked..this may sound weird, but ok, you two seem so happy?
