“Hello?” Tina answered her office phone.

“I’m in the lobby staring down a burly looking security guard,” Bette said in a low voice that implied conspiracy. “Should I make a break to get past him or do you want to meet me here?”

“You might as well stay there. I’m ready to go,” Tina smiled at the sound of her voice. “I’ll be right down.”

After replacing the receiver, Tina reached into her purse to apply a fresh coat of lipstick. It was a subtle shade – just enough to give her a hint of colour.

She took a deep breath and headed downstairs.

Bette glanced up as she heard the chime of the elevator. The doors opened to reveal Tina, looking every bit the part of a movie development executive in her tailored navy pantsuit and burgundy heels.

Bette stood from the lobby chair and greeted her with a smile. She leaned in to kiss Tina on the cheek and was surprised at the warmth that emanated from her during their brief embrace.

“We get to walk to lunch today,” Tina said as they separated. “The restaurant is only a couple of buildings down the block.”

“I had no idea this area had so much to offer,” Bette commented.

“Might be worth spending more time in the neighbourhood?” Tina asked.

“I don’t think it would take much convincing for that to happen,” Bette replied.

They exited into bright sunshine and Tina waved left to indicate their direction.

It wasn’t long before they were being shown to their table.

“Can I bring you a wine list this afternoon?” the server inquired.

“I’d better not,” Tina said. “But if you…”

Bette shook her head.

“I have to head back to work after lunch,” she said. She directed her next comment to the server. “Soy latte with an extra shot would be great.”

“I’ll have the same, but without the extra shot,” Tina said.

The server departed to get their drinks and let them peruse the menu.

“I need the extra energy after you kept me up so late last night,” Bette explained.

“I’m sure it won’t be the last time,” Tina said.

She meant that it wouldn’t be the last time a person needed a little extra caffeine to get through a Friday. But what it sounded like was far different from her intent. The blush rose almost immediately in her cheeks.

“I mean…that’s not how I should have said that…I just…” Tina stammered.

“Tina,” Bette laughed as she interrupted the explanation. “You’re charming when you’re flustered. I know how you meant it. But I still like how you said it.”

“Can I just pretend I didn’t say that and carry on with looking at the menu?” Tina asked.

“Sure,” Bette said. “Is there anything in particular you recommend?”

“Anything I’ve tried has been good,” Tina said. “And given its proximity to work, I obviously eat here a lot.”

“What’s your favourite?” Bette asked.

“Seared tuna on mixed baby greens,” Tina closed her menu, indicating a decision had been reached. “It’s delicious but not too filling.
