Missing You

An exhausted Bette set her briefcase down near her feet as she settled into her first class seat on the hastily arranged flight. She rifled through her briefcase, looking for her notes on her last meeting, trying to ignore the chaos that seemed to be working its way to her row.

"You could have waited," Phyllis said obviously annoyed.

"Sorry," Bette smiled weakly. "I was thinking about the budget and didn't realize you weren't behind me."

The flight attendant covering first class quickly made her way to the two new passengers inquiring if they were interested in drinks. Without hesitation, Phyllis ordered 2 glasses of wine.

"I'm not sure why we had to take the first flight out," Phyllis continued to blather as Bette jotted down some additional thoughts at the bottom of her notes from the meeting. "We should have gone out and celebrated with a night out on the town."

"You could have, I simply wanted to get home."

"We had 2 more days scheduled for the trip."

"We didn't need them," Bette said calmly. "We got what we came for."

The flight attendant handed a glass of wine to both Phyllis and Bette, quickly working her way down the aisle to ensure the first class passengers were being tended to.

"To securing the largest grant in the history of private education," Phyllis raised her glass to Bette. "How does it feel to be a miracle worker?"

"Hardly," Bette tapped her glass against Phyllis's before taking a sip of the mediocre wine. "I'm sure you could have done it without me."

"Don't kid yourself. It was the 'Great Bette Porter' that wooed the pretentious New York artistic community."

Bette sipped her wine once more as she listened to the announcement instructing the flight crew to prepare for takeoff. The routine seatbelt demonstration began as Bette finished her wine and leaned back with her eyes closed thinking of Tina. She was excited to surprise her coming home days earlier, missing her so much that it physically hurt.

Tina groaned as she heard Angelica begin to stir in the early morning. She glanced at the clock only to confirm what she instinctively knew; it was too early for her to be awake given her previous night accompanying Alice and Shane to Milk.

"I'm too old to stay out all night."

Tina stretched and turned over staring at the empty spot next to her in bed. She rubbed the pillow lightly before jumping when Angelica called out for her, indicating she was ready to begin her day.

The morning seemed to pass by in the blink of an eye, between making breakfast, playing with Angelica while handling a conference call for a script review, and picking up the house. Tina hadn't even had a moment to even look at a clock. It wasn't until the house phone rang that she noticed it was nearing lunchtime.

"Hello?"

"Glad to know you're alive," Alice said with a smirk. "God that was fun last night."

"I'm too old for that anymore."

"Bullshit," Alice barked back. "Besides Kit told me that she was excited to have as much time with Princess Angelica as she had because we dragged your sorry ass off the couch."

"It wasn't sorry until I consumed way too much alcohol."

"Are we meeting for lunch?" Alice asked deciding she was likely pushing her luck but needed to ask anyway. "You can't hide out the entire time Bette is in New York."

"I need an afternoon to myself," Tina said as she stifled a yawn. "I have work that needs to get done too."

As Tina discussed the gossip from the previous night with Alice, she multi-tasked by serving Angelica lunch. She shoveled spoon after spoon of macaroni and cheese into Angelica's waiting mouth as she laughed at Alice recounting the previous night's run-in with Nadia Merchant.

"She should have really stayed with Jackie instead of Gabby," Alice continued. "It ruined her reputation! Not to mention the fact that she's about a decade behind in clothing styles."

"As engrossed as I am in this conversation, your Earth Daughter is desperate for her nap since she just finished her lunch. I'll call you when I'm done working for the afternoon."

After ending the conversation with Alice and getting Angelica settled for her nap, Tina found herself immersed in silence.
