Bette lay still, paralyzed as she felt two strong arms wrap around her lean body. Her breath caught in her chest and she tried desperately to breathe. It had all been a lie. Everything she knew to be true was not even close to reality.
Drew: You awake?
Bette squeezed her eyes shut searching for the strength to say yes.
Bette: uh huh.
Drew: Good. I was hoping you were.
She felt his hard body press against her back and it made her squirm.
Drew: Are you ready for today?
Bette knew what today meant to Drew. They had been dating for about 2 years now and he had decided it was time for her to meet his family. This day was destined to happen and it was only a matter of time.
Bette turned around to face the blonde hair blue eyed man she wanted so much to love.
Bette: Of course I am. She placed a kiss on his tan forehead.
Drew: They are all going to love you.
Bette smiled knowingly. Quickly she jumped out of bed and began her walk to the shower.
Drew: Where are you going?
Bette: I'm not going to meet your family looking like this baby.
Bette pointed to her unruly curls and wrinkled shirt.
Drew: Oh, I think they'd love it!
Bette: I'm not gonna take the risk if that's ok with you.
She smiled sweetly at him. He had been to good to her over the past 2 years. They had practically built a life together, sharing everything. Everything but this. Everything but the secret that Bette held deep inside of her.
The brunette disappeared into the bathroom and let her body feel the scolding water pour over her. She wanted to be numb today and the hotter the water the less she could feel.
As Drew pulled the Range Rover into the large driveway Bette took a deep breath. She felt Drew grab her hand as if to say "it'll be ok".
Bette: I'm fine baby. Really I am.
Drew: They are going to love you. I promise.
The two stepped out of the SUV and onto the gravel of the driveway. Bette looked up at the house. It was bigger then she had imagined. She knew Drew's family had money, lot's of it. But she never expected this. It was practically it's own state. Drew led the way and Bette followed closely behind. The front door swung open just before the young couple reached the porch.
Margaret: There's my boy!
Drew: Hey ma!
He wrapped his arms around the petite woman, lifting her into the air.
Margaret: I am so happy that you're home! We all are.
Drew: Mom, this is Bette Porter.
Bette extended her hand but was surprised when the older woman pulled her in for a hug.
Margaret: We hug here Bette!
Bette: Yes I see that now.
Margaret: Please come in.
Bette walked through the foyer, her mouth agape. IT was all Italian marble and hand crafted. The house itself was a work of art. The beautifully framed paintings in the hallway captured Bette's attention first.
Margaret: Drew tells me you are an artist.
Bette: Oh hardly. I love art, but I'm better at appreciating it then creating it. These paintings are amazing. The detail, the brush strokes, the color.
Drew: My sister actually painted these.
Bette's eyes grew wide.
Bette: Really? They are incredible!
Margaret: Come inside you two. Everyone is so excited that you're here.
Bette's hand was captured by Margaret as she led her into the living room. It looked like a family portrait. Drew's father sat in the leather chair at the end of the room, while Drew's other siblings were seated across the couch.
Drew: Ok, let's take this from the top. Everyone, this is Bette Porter. Bette, this is Michael, Blake, Monica and my father Daniel.
They all waved happily and Bette extended the same.
Bette: It's a pleasure to meet you all.
Daniel: Come Bette, sit. Can we get you a drink?
Bette looked around. What she wanted was a martini but if no one else was drinking she had planned to pass. Michael was holding a beer,Blake had what looked like a cosmopolitan Monica had a glass of white wine and Daniel was holding what looked like scotch.
Bette: Sure, I'll have a glass of wine. Thank you.
Monica stood and made her way to the bar at the end of the room. Bette took notice of the way she walked. She watched her wavy blonde hair sway behind her.
Bette: Thank you.
Monica turned back to Bette.
Monica: No problem.
Daniel: So Bette, Drew tells us you are an avid fan of the arts.
Bette: Oh, it's my one true love in life.
Drew: Well art and me.
Bette smiled back at Drew.
Bette: Yes, of course you.
Daniel: I sit on the board of the community arts education project and I can't begin to tell you how much work needs to be done.
Bette: You don't have to. I already know. They are taking the arts out of schools and transferring the funds over to sports.
