Did Tina give you my cell number?" "Yes." "It's easier to reach me there." "I'll remember. Thanks. Say hi to Angie for me." "I will." Bette nodded, and hung up. She paused for a moment, then dialed another number. "Hello?" "Hey, T." Bette greeted. "Hey, back." Tina returned. "Anything wrong?" "No. I just talked to your neighbor." "How was it?" "Reminds me of Alice." "Can't deny that." Tina agreed. "How old is she?" "Fifteen." "And home on a Friday night?" "We all are." Bette conceded that point. "How was the meeting?" "Helena gave them a verbal beating. They were practically revising their script throughout dinner." "Everything sounds meaner in a British accent." "Maybe." Bette took a deep breath. "I was thinking." "Dangerous occupation." "I know." "Thinking about what?" "I just... I have a question. It's kind of been bugging me." "Well, ease your mind. Go on." "Why'd you sign the separation papers?" Dead silence. "T?" "It was the right thing to do." "Yeah, that's kind of what's been bothering me. Did you sign it because you wanted it and agreed to the terms, or because you thought that's what I wanted?" "I asked you for separation, and you gave me papers. I didn't want to drag out our issues while I deal with mine." "Did you get what you wanted?" "I feel better." "That wasn't my question." "I know." Bette waited, but did not get more of an answer. "So, um, would you like to talk to Angelica?" "Yes, please." "Hang on." Bette moved towards the edge of her bed, and pressed the phone to Angelica's ear. "Baby, it's mommy." Angelica looked at her, then smiled broadly when Tina must've spoken. She began a lengthy speech to the phone. And Bette wondered what the true extent of Tina's "issues" were.
