When she told Bette a year ago that Angelica was their baby, she'd meant it.
Angelica finally finished her statement, and allowed her Mama B to look at her other mother.
"Waiting long?"
"Long enough." Tina replied.
"So I was--" Bette began, before she was rudely interrupted by the usual rude interruption of her life.
"Hey, what were you two doing here last night?" Alice asked, joining their table. She sat down between Bette and Tina, looking pointedly at them both. "And how come I'm the last to know, huh?"
Tina shook her head. "Bette, I'll leave you to it." She picked up her things, and kissed the top of her daughter's head. "Baby, I'll see you on Sunday."
Bette opened her mouth to answer, then realized Tina was (of course) addressing their daughter. She grinned at Angelica. "Of course."
"I'll call her later." Tina told Bette.
Helena, who was about to drag Alice back, looked at Tina. "Where are you going?"
"I'm going home to change for our dinner with the producers of that disaster indie movie we both refuse to greenlight." Tina reminded.
Helena frowned. "That's tonight?"
"Yes."
"Can't we reschedule?"
"I can't, but if the owner of the studio does..."
Helena pouted. "I loathe my assistant."
Tina laughed. "Well, I'm gonna go."
"What are you doing tomorrow?" Bette blurted out.
Tina, Helena and Alice all turned to look at her.
"I'm bringing Angelica to the zoo, and I was thinking..." Bette hesitated. Was she really going to ask Tina to the zoo, where they would be alone with their daughter, and be asking her in front of all these people, in such a public place?
Tina looked at her, puzzled. A part of her read into the question, wildly interpreting text as a date, then berated herself for such a ridiculous notion. "I can't."
"Oh?" Helena, Alice and Bette all asked. Two voices in curiosity, the other in disappointment.
"I'm having people clean the pool tomorrow." Tina said. "They're installing a new filter, and I'm just inept with hands-on experimentation."
Alice burst out laughing at the last part. "That's not what I remember."
Bette kicked her under the table, while Helena hit her on the back of her head.
"Ow!" Alice pointed to the two of them. "I'm telling!"
Tina, however, did not show much humor. "Yeah." She smiled at Angelica. "I'll talk to you later, honey."
Angelica reached out for her, and Tina obliged, picking up her daughter. They exchanged hugs and kisses on the cheek. "I'll miss you."
Angelica answered.
Tina kissed her cheek once more. "Love you, baby." Then she handed Angelica back to Bette.
Bette knew very well how Tina felt, leaving Angelica. And felt miserable that she had to be the catalyst for their separation.
"I really should go." Tina sighed. She turned to Helena. "Pick me up?"
Helena hedged. "Well, um..."
"If you make me meet those idiots alone, Helena, I swear I am going to tell your mother." Tina threatened.
Helena sighed in defeat. "Seven-thirty."
Tina smiled. "See you then."
"I should be going, too. I'll walk you to your car." Helena said, and they both left the room.
Bette watched the mother of her child and Tina's ex leave together. God, her Helena-hatred was suddenly, inexplicably, back.
