Chapter Three

The journey to friendship

Bette walked down to the front of the store. Passing Kit standing
huddled with her cell phone. Bette stopped and shot her the look of
death. Kit stopped talking. Bette grabbed the phone. "Let me guess this
Alice?" Alice knew instantly it was Bette. She thought about hanging up
but thought that would childish" "Alright Porter, relax.. it was
only.."
Bette cut her off "Alice if you ever fuck with my life like this again,
I'll.. I'll love you forever" Bette smiled at Kit, reaching over and
hugging her. Suddenly Bette started to cry and handed Kit the phone
back. Kit started talking to Alice again "Alice, I'll call you back
there is too much going on right now" Alice is stunned at what Bette
said "Kit, call me when you can"
Kit held her sister tightly praying that her heart had begun to melt
and that she would be open to receive the love she deserved from the
love of her life. Bette pulled away and looked at Kit "You took the
chance of a lifetime.. If ever I knew you loved me it's now"
Kit could not believe her ears - Bette was instantly tender? "Bette, I
want you to be happy again.. I mean in your soul baby sis" "I know you
do Sis.. and I think this is only for a moment in time but being able
to put closure on this is the best thing for Tina and me" "Closure!,
no.. no.. you are not getting away with that bullshit" "Hush, Kit - no
miracle story here.."

Bette turned and started walking back towards the Inn. Her heart and
mind were racing and so was her body. Tina looked so good and the
thought of seeing her for breakfast meant Bette would not sleep all
night. "I need to be alone Kit, I'm going to take a walk and I will
meet you back at the Inn" Bette headed towards the hotel with a heavy
heart and full mind.

Tina took three deep cleansing breaths and began to compose herself.
All she could think is that the universe had made a decision for her
that exposed a desire she kept hidden in the deepest part of her soul,
the desire to see Bette-to simply look in her eyes again. Many nights
that thought was like a mantra or prayer that would come from her heart
as she drifted off to sleep.

"Tina are you alright?" Rachel and Sammy looked really concerned as
Tina walked back into the store. "I'm sorry to make you worry, seeing
that person - well it was a shock" "She's my ex from Los Angeles. I
have not seen her in four almost five years" "What's she doing her
Rachel asked in a protective tone. "Don't worry sweetie, Bette is a lot
of things but she would knowingly harm me" "Her sister Kit and another
old friend of ours set up with out our knowledge" "Are they trying to
get you back together?" asked Sammy "I'm certain of it" Tina said
laughing "and speak of the Devil I need to speak to Kit I see her
standing out there" Tina gave Rachel and Sammy a look of thanks and
headed out the front door of the store. "Kit Porter!" Kit turned around
surprised but genuinely happy to see Tina she always felt like Tina was
family, they had a special bond and Kit had missed her deeply over the
years. "O.K. Tina, relax don't get mad we meant the best.." Tina
reached for Kit and pulled her in for a huge bear hug. They hugged and
hugged, Kit kissing both Tina's cheeks and tears falling down their
faces. "Kit, what you did, or should I say you and Alice.. it was
sneaky and could have caused heart failure but it's good for Bette and
I to have proper closure, perhaps we can be friends someday"

The rest of the afternoon and evening passed like slow motion for Tina
and Bette. Each lost in her own thoughts, memories and regrets. Tina
tried to busy herself in the store and with all the Sunday customers
but each smile and small chat conversation took huge effort. Her mind
kept processing the same thoughts over and over again. Would she be
able to stand hearing about Bette's new love's and huge exciting life
in Rome and L.A., but mostly how was she going to look in those brown
eyes of Bette's and not have her soul betray her? In many ways Tina had
resigned herself that she would not find love again in that way. No
person could have more than one eternal soul mate - that is what made
Bette's betrayal so deep, impossible to forgive, impossible to trust
her again. But Tina's life had found renewed love and hope in a very
special love - how would she explain Jessie to Bette and would Bette be
accepting. Tina had not shared with Alice about Jessie so she knew
there was no way Kit would know and would have warned Bette. It had
been difficult keeping Jessie from Alice the last couple of years,
trying to have quiet conversations away from Jessie and hoping Alice
would not ask too many questions about what or who was new in her life.

Bette paced around her room feeling like she was going to go nuts. She
now understood the meaning of shock. It did not even feel like she was
in her own body. Over and over she was saying her name.. "Tina, Tina,
Tina" Bette laid the bed and stared up at the ceiling thinking of Tina.
Her voice, eyes and smile all the same but better - familiar and
intimate but she no longer was her Tina. Suddenly like a train slamming
into a wall emotion flooded Bette's heart and tears began to flow, and
sobbing from the deepest well in her soul. She had no one to blame but
herself for what happened she thought as emotion over took her.
"Baby girl?.. " Bette could hear Kit calling to her from the adjoining
room. Kit slowly opened the door and what saw confirmed what she heard
- the weeping. Kit sat besides her younger sister and pulled her in her
arms comforting her and drying her tears.
"Kit, it's like I lost her all over again seeing her.." "No, it's not
Bette, Tina is not dead and neither are you - there is always hope.."
"I owe Tina more than to make her life complex again, look at the peace
she has found here.." "Bette, I want you to get up and go wash your
face, it's time for dinner and long talk"

The Inn had a small intimate bistro with a good menu and food suddenly
sounded really good to Bette. "Bette, I don't want you to be upset and
mad about this trip - our intention was to be helpful" "I know.. I
know.. and even thou it's unbelievablely manipulative, heavy hand,
meddling" "Easy up on the compliments there baby sis" " I know you love
me, you have always looked out for me." Bette reached across the table
and held her Sister's hand giving her a look that said I know you meant
to help. "But what now Kit? It's crazy to think that anything could or
should happen between Tina and me" "Just be open to the possibilities -
you have dated a lot of women but the light in your eyes did not return
until today" "After you saw her for just a few moments Bette Porter it
was like you finally returned to your body" There was a long silence,
Bette nodded her head and a single tear fell from her warm chocolate
eyes and she smiled the softest of smiles.

Bette and Kit finished dinner and decided to get some sleep it had been
an emotional and they both felt wiped out. They said goodnight and
Bette returned to her room. After preparing for bed she noticed how
quiet it was something rare in L.A. How on earth was she going to sleep
tonight?

Tina spent time doing some baking and sorting of orders for the store
and cleaning up, anything to avoid thinking about seeing Bette again
today. It would be good to hurry and get home, see Jessie, feel
grounded again. Breakfast with Bette would simply be about catching up
- and of course she would want to hear that Bette was happy. After
everything that happened, the anger, pain and loss Tina could never
wish Bette ill, she was too precious she meant too much. Tina arrived
home to Jessie's awaiting arms and adoring smile and she knew things
were going to be O.K. - Jessie had that effect on her from the moment
she first came into her life.

Its 2:40 a.m. are you sleeping?
