DESERT STORM - Chapter 40 by sandscribe Page 4

Print This Page Print This Page Previous page | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | Next page
To return to their distant lands or maybe grace another one with their presence the desert was changed forever by that summer tempest.  No one is the same once touched by death and love.  All life is a tempest and a miracle.  Thank God for breakable hearts

"Now come on, it's getting late" he said looking up at the churning bronze sky.

"There is a sandstorm coming let us go back down to your mother"

"Papapapa" his children cried out in unison.  "Tell us again tell us againabout the woman with the golden hair, and the dark haired muse"

They so loved a good story, his children true souls of the desert that they were.  But before he could pacify them --

"Ali!!  Ali!!!!", came his wife's voice from the floor below.  "I have dinner on the tablebring the children down"

"All right little ones, you heard your mother.  Enough now I have told you enough the next chapter is still to be re-written Let's get you inside" Ali told his young audience.  "Maybe another day, we continue"

He never tired telling his children the story of the women from the West.  Of the sandstorm that swept in and covered this, their battered City.  They would sit up here on the roof of their home on hot, sultry summer evenings, and as he beat on his worn carpets to shake them free from the day's dust and sand, Ali would spin his children tales of light, joy, and beauty.  Of love, and adventure, and passion, and grief.  Sometimes, he would stir the leaves, and brew them a different version.  A tale of fear, and triumph, and sadness, and chaos.  Of truth and deception.  Friendship and despair.  It was a time when nothing was as it seemed.  Friend turned against friend.  Enemies became comrades.  There was liberation in pain.  And lies became gospel.  But at all times, love broke through barriers and miracles held true.

Then, he would stir the leaves again, and brew another version.  Because always -always - in the desert, there are as many stories as the shifting grains of sand.  And when the winds blow, it sweeps away the broken hearts and shattered hopes, to leave a fresh morning on which to write again.  Again.  There are no scars in the morning.  A blank page.

A blank page.  There are no scars

Maktoob.  And so it is written.

In sand.

The end. -----------------------

Note to readers:

The idea of the desert as a metaphor for the heart planted its seed in my imagination when i first saw "The English Patient" years ago.  I have always felt the visual exercise of the film to be a much more exquisitely literary experience than the flaccid book.  (my opinion only of course).  the notion that as in the desert, there are no maps or fixed boundaries for love and identity is one i find terribly compelling. and true. so i guess you could say my desert fascination grew from there.

on top of that, there is the reality of war. again -- a situation where there are no rules, boundaries are fluid, and people can discover, or re-create, themselves. kind of like -- falling in love with a woman for the first time when you've always believed yourself straight, you know? anyway -- this is a long way to basically explain why the whole war-torn Baghdad reality appealed to me as a setting for such a love story.  and this is why you now have all these chapters of Desert Storm - i hope the story has moved you in one way or another.  Chukran for all coming on this Arabic carpet ride with me.  it has been such a miracle for me more than i can ever explain.  Chukran you guys.  If I could personally thank each and every one of you, i would.

now remember - live each day as if it is eternal, live each day as if it's the last.

I wish you all colours.

Comments: Hmmm I thought it was mentioned in a previous chapter that Mo was married. I guess I assumed that everyone knew. This whole thing has to suck for his kids. :(

Comments: Okay now that I've finished the chapter, please allow me to leave yet another comment. lol Excellent story from beginning to end. I think what I enjoyed most about this story was that it wasn't so much an L Word fanfic as it was a fictional story based on current events with L Word elements to draw us in.

Comments: While I am sad to see this story end, there are a few things I feel compelled to write. This has been a beautifully written story, and I think Lamentamini is right, it was more of a story based on current events than fan fiction. Please do write another story. . .your use of language and metaphor is amazing. I look forward to reading your work again.

This story also helped me and hopefully others that the soldiers aren't the only ones at risk, that we have the people behind the scene such as reporters, medics and others. I'm truly honored to have read your story and more honored that u have shared this powerful story about life with us. Ur friend till the end, Rain.Te deseo Mucha suerte en todo lo que hagas en tu vida.

Comments: What a beautiful story. It was sad that Mo had to die. I am sure that somewhere is Iraq, there many Mo's for our American troops and as sure as I am of that, I am sure that some have felt the sting of death. Will you please consider continuing this story after Bette, Tina & Alice get home. Where will their reporting skills take them....will they break the story that will bring down the Administration that put American's in harms way?

Comments: Wow. I had a somewhat ominous feeling when you wrote at the start about having a note at the end of this chapter. Aw. But it was a beautifully written story, Sandscribe, and I am a bit sad that it's reached the end. I certainly hope you are going to write some more. If not a sequel, a whole new B&T story altogether. An excellent writer like you should never stop writing. Thanks! Cheers!
