"I want you so much Tina, I can't believe I've been able to keep myself from touching you these last weeks. Now that I know where you are with this, you can be sure what's going to happen the next time I see you..."
"And when will that be?" Tina was no longer tired and she hoped Bette felt the same way.
Bette paused only for a moment before saying what she really wanted. She would no longer check her desires for this woman. She had learned her lesson.
"Can I come over?" Bette asked, already knowing what the answer would be.
"How fast can you be here?"
"It took me about half an hour to get home, so give me about 40 minutes before I'm on your doorstep," Bette replied.
"Bette," Tina started.
"We're now officially wasting time talking on the phone Tina," Bette's impatience came through, even though she was teasing.
"Drive safely, okay?"
"I will. See you soon."
They disconnected their call and Bette launched into a flurry of activity to get herself out the door as efficiently as possible. She contemplated throwing a few things to take with her. After all, there was no pretence tonight - she was definitely spending the night at Tina's.
She dismissed the idea of packing a bag almost as quickly as it occurred to her, strictly based on the fact that it would merely delay her departure. She did a mental checklist before leaving the house.
"Cell phone, wallet, keys...sanity," she said aloud. "Three out of four ain't bad..."
'Why the fuck does she have to live way out in Westlake?' she asked herself. 'She must have to commute at least an hour to work everyday.'
She exited from Santa Monica Boulevard onto the freeway with uncharacteristic temerity as her desire overrode her inclination to be cautious. She felt the perspiration on her palms as her hands gripped the steering wheel.
She heard her phone ringing and welcomed the distraction from the drive that seemed to be taking far too long.
"Hello?"
"Bette, it's Shane! Whatcha doin'?" The question was more of a salutation than an actual request for information. The music was pounding as a background to Shane's voice as she yelled to be heard above the din.
"Not much, what's up?"
"Alice said you were hanging out at home all mopey, why don't you come out with us and get some cheer," she suggested.
"Shane I know you can keep a secret..."
"Of course, Bette, is something wrong?" Shane's voice became serious with concern at Bette's words.
"No, nothing's wrong, it's quite the opposite actually," Bette smiled. "I just got off the phone with Tina and I'm presently on my way over there. I'm just exiting to the 101 right now."
"Now that's the Bette I know and love," Shane said with admiration in her voice. "So when are we gonna meet this girl? Sounds like she's certainly captured your attention."
"Alice suggested coffee with everyone this weekend sometime, but we might be... busy." Bette laughed.
"I'll make up a good excuse why you couldn't come tonight Bette," Shane was pleased to note the unique timbre of Bette's voice, which she inferred meant her friend was smitten. "And I'm sure you two will have to come up for air at some point. Besides, now I'm really curious to meet her..."
"Okay Shane, we'll see how the weekend unfolds," Bette considered herself lucky to have so many close friends looking out for her.
'Thank God it's 11 at night, I can't imagine doing this trip at rush hour every day," Bette thought. She was definitely speeding, but didn't have too many concerns considering the late hour and the sparse traffic.
_______________
Tina set the phone down. Her hands were trembling slightly.
"Okay, 40 minutes. What should I do to keep from losing my mind for the next 40 minutes," she spoke to the room around her, seeking a solution to her anxiety. "Clean. That's it. I'll clean."
She noticed the photograph of her and Eric on the dresser.
'Fuck, that's just got to go for so many reasons...' she said as she picked it up and deposited it into the top drawer. It wasn't that Eric was a bad person. She really felt as though he was very much part of her past at this point and removing his picture solidified her intention to move on to what she perceived would be a new chapter in her life.
She tidied up the room and made the bed before deciding to jump into the shower in an effort to clear her mind and pass a bit more time.
"Okay. How hard can this be?" she asked as the water ran over her face and down her body. She squeezed a generous amount of body wash into the palm of her hand and lathered herself quickly. "I know what it takes to please me, it won't be difficult to translate that knowledge into what will please her."
Tina absently ran her hands from below her navel and up over her abdomen to her breasts and over her neck as the bubbles dissipated with the continuing flow of water. She finished rinsing and turned off the taps.
She stepped out of the shower and dried off before changing into the jeans and top she had worn to Bette's office the day they first kissed.
'She said she liked this outfit, might as well take my cue from what I already know she appreciates,' Tina thought.
She ran her fingers through her damp hair before deciding she would just let it hang loosely around her shoulders.
She was startled by the sound of the buzzer.
"That was no 40 minutes," she said glancing at the clock. "It wasn't even 30 minutes."
She walked to the door and looked through the peephole, just to be sure. On the other side, she saw Bette glancing around the hallway.
Tina opened the door to greet her.
Bette's smile lit up the doorway as she caught sight of Tina.
"That was much quicker than 40 minutes," Tina said reprovingly. "I thought I told you to drive safely." Tina reached forward to brush away an imaginary piece of lint from the lapel on Bette's jacket. It was an unconscious move intended only to allow for her to touch Bette in some way.
"I may have gone a bit over the speed limit," Bette admitted. "But I am here safely."
Tina closed the door as Bette came into the entryway. Bette slipped off her light jacket and Tina hung it in the closet.
"You changed," Bette observed and noted that Tina was wearing the jeans she had referenced in their conversation earlier in the evening.
