When Im ready? Bette wasnt really sure where this conversation was going, but she had an idea.
Yeah, you know, when youve changed and gotten into bed and youre ready to talk tome. Tina grinned as she dragged out the end of her sentence.
Maybe Alice was wrong about the straight girl making the first move, Bette thought to herself. Now Im really glad I didnt go out with the girls tonight.
Bette? Tina had a sudden undeniable concern that she had misread the intention behind Bettes call, and sought reassurance that she hadnt suggested something that Bette wasnt interested in. Regardless of how surreptitious she had been, her suggestion was not one she could very well frame as innocent.
Bette cleared her throat before she spoke. There was not much doubt in her mind about what Tina was implying would be the topic of conversation when she called back, but she wanted to clear the lingering question that remained.
Sorry, Im heremy mind was just wandering for a moment, Bette responded.
And where was your mind wandering to, if I may ask? Tina still wasnt clear she had read Bette properly.
The day you came to my office to pick up your earring.
They had yet to refer to that event, in the three weeks that had elapsed since.
I guess I can consider myself lucky you found it, Tina responded.
I think it might have been the luckiest day of my life, Bette found these words tumbling out of her before she had any chance to determine their impact.
The smile on Tinas face spread from ear to ear as she heard Bettes comment.
Okay, she thought to herself, I think the flirting and innuendo have gone on long enough
Is 15 minutes enough time for you to get ready for bed? Tina queried.
Lets make it 10, Bette responded. Ill call you in no more than 10 minutes, okay?
They agreed on a time and Bette disconnected the call and raced into the bathroom stripping her clothes off as she walked. Her evening routine had never been so abbreviated before, but her only thoughts were of getting Tina back on the phone.
She pulled on shorts and a tank top after washing up and crawled into bed to make the call. She again found herself taking a few deep breaths before dialling.
Hi, Tina, its Bette, she said.
Tina laughed as she heard Bette once again introduce who was calling.
Well, Im glad you clarified who was calling, that couldve been embarrassing, Tinas display of confidence masked how nervous she really was.
Sorry, force of habit, I guess, Bette smiled as she settled back onto the stack of pillows behind her.
You said you were thinking about that day in your office. Was there anything in particular you were recalling?
The picture I have in my mind of you as you walked in, Bette reminisced. Your jeans were hugging your hips and the light cotton of your topit felt like you were teasing me with how shear it wasI could see your skin through itI couldnt resist you.
Well, youve done a pretty good job of resisting me since then, Tina responded with a hint of frustration in her voice.
Are you telling me I shouldnt be resisting you? Because tonights been the first clear indication that you were ready tomove forward, I guess.
Bette. Tina used her name as an admonition rather than an introduction to what she would say next. What part of breaking up with my boyfriend to spend every possible free moment in your presence was confusing to you?
Well, since you put it that wayI guess thats pretty much the way Alice put it too.
So, youve been seeking outside counsel on this, have you, Tina took this as a boost to her self esteem, and was ready to do a little fact finding mission on just what Bette and Alice had discussed about their budding relationship.
Of course, Bette started. I havent discussed it with anyone else, but she keeps on asking me how things are progressing and I have had to keep telling her Im taking things slowly
And what did she say to that? Tina was curious what kind of advice Bette was getting from her friends.
She kept saying if I was waiting for you to make the first move, that Id be waiting a long time, Bette smiled. Three weeks isnt that long though
Alice sounds pretty wise, Tina wished she had someone to bounce her ideas about this relationship off of, but at this point shed just been vague with co-workers about her break up with Eric and the obvious fact that she had been floating around the office every time she returned from lunch or had flowers delivered.
So you havent spent the last three weeks thinking Im polite and chivalrous, Bette asked, but instead youve considered me distant and uninterested.
That might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I was starting to wonder if you thought of me as anything more than a friend, Tina admitted to her insecurity.
Let me assure you, I dont think of my friends the way I think about you Bette said simply.
Oh and how is it that you think about me Tina was willing to troll for a few compliments given her confusion over the last three weeks.
There was no holding Bette back now.
That youre intelligent and sexy and that your lips, that day in my office, were absolutely delicious, she finished and licked her own lips, finding they were dry as she thought back to that fateful day.
That kiss turned my world upside down, you know that dont you? Tinas heart raced with Bettes words.
If you think a kiss can turn your world upside down, I cant wait to show you what else will happen to your world Bettes voice was low and her words came in measured beats as her desire welled up.
Tina felt as though she was losing her ability to guide the pace of this conversation, and took strides to re-establish their path, and her control of it.
I dont know if I expected you to kiss me that day, but I can tell you now Im glad you did, Tinas voice was barely above a whisper.
Well in retrospect it feels like I may have spent the last three weeks being unduly cautious about allowing you time to be sure about what could develop between us, Bette started. At the very least I wish I had kissed you goodnight tonight.
Tinas control continued to slip from her tenuous grasp as Bette verbalized her desire. She did what she could to maintain her ability to direct what happened next.
It didnt take you long to call me back tonight, she started. Youre quick to get ready for bed.
But once Im in bed, Im slow, determined and methodical, Bette grinned.
Tina started to wonder what she had unleashed as she heard Bettes desire loud and clear through her words.
What did you decide to wear to bed tonight? Tina asked, tentatively.
Just shorts and a tank tophow about you; why dont you describe what youre wearing
Tina looked down at her favourite nightshirt, one that was almost threadbare from wear over the years. Because it was such a cool night, she also had thick cotton socks on.
What the fuck, she thought to herself. Its not like I havent been thinking and dreaming about her for the last three weeks anyways. Might as well see where this is going to go.
Right now the only thing Im wearing is a smile, babe. She was indeed wearing a smile as she spoke, surprised these words were issued forth from her very own mouth.
Bettes eyes widened as she let her mind wander to the image of Tina reclining on her bed as they conversed.
Youre not going to make it very easy for me to sleep tonight, you know
Maybe I dont want you to sleep tonight, Tina replied
I wish I was there right now, Bette closed her eyes to imagine sitting beside Tina on her bed.
And what would you do if you were here? Tina asked mischievously.
I cant believe I kept myself from kissing you tonight Bette was figuratively kicking herself for her patience with Tina these past weeks.
Bette, you didnt answer my question, Tina scolded. What would you do to me if you were here right now? Tina didnt think Bette would need this much encouragement to move the conversation in the direction she desired.
Youd be feeling my mouth and tongue all over your body and I wouldnt stop until I heard you scream with satisfaction Bette finally succumbed to what Tina had been obviously intending for her to say all along.
Tinas eyes rolled into the back of her head as she pressed back into her pillow. She felt a warmth spread from deep inside her as she imagined Bettes mouth on her body, coaxing, teasing and appeasing her every want.
Bette heard a deep sigh escape from Tinas mouth and knew she had aroused something in her that she wanted to capitalize on.
I want you so much Tina, I cant believe Ive been able to keep myself from touching you these last weeks. Now that I know where you are with this, you can be sure whats going to happen the next time I see you
And when will that be? Tina was no longer tired and she hoped Bette felt the same way.
Bette paused only for a moment before saying what she really wanted. She would no longer check her desires for this woman. She had learned her lesson.
Can I come over? Bette asked, already knowing what the answer would be.
