Tina sat at her small desk in the center of what felt like the universe starring blindly at the posters that surrounded her. She found her eyes focused on the bold colors of RENT. It was her favorite show that shed ever seen on Broadway. Of course, it was the ONLY show shed ever seen. Tina Kennard had just moved to NYC 3 days ago from Arizona and was determined to make it the experience of a lifetime. She wanted to see every show, talk to every playwright, and make friends with all the right people. Tina knew most of the people in her office looked down on her. After all they thought she only got the internship because her dear old daddy happened to know someone who knew someones sister that had a cousin who knew a man that owned a producing company. What they didnt know was that Tina called every day begging for his chance, pleading to be heard. Finally after months, the call came in and Tina hopped on the first plane. It was the summer before her final year at the University Arizona and Tina was ready to take on the theatre industry even if it killed her. She brought with her every play she had ever written, even musicals. She knew at some point they would be read by the right people.
Her job in the office mainly consisted of her faxing documents, making photo copies and running across the street for Starbucks. She didnt mind. This was one place she felt comfortable. She could just be herself and know that herself was just fine with everyone around her.
Alex: Tina.
Alex was her kind of boss. He reported to the head of the company and Tina reported to him.
Alex: Tina??
Tina snapped her mind out of dream world.
Tina: Yes sorry. I was just...
Alex: Dreaming, I know.
Alex was young. Maybe 35. He was tall and handsome. His sense of humor and Tinas quick wit made them fast friends as well as co - workers. Their first day working together Alex was singing Pat Beneter Love is a Battlefield He would joke about how he was the stereo typical gay man. When Tina thought it was safe she announced that she would be to if she wasnt such a lesbian. Alex was in shock. His gaydar was normally perfect but he didnt see that coming.
Tina: Yeah, sorry.
Tina blushed. Her face beet red.
Alex: Korey called and he needs you to run these papers to the Gershwin. Think you can handle that?
He was being sarcastic of course. He knew Tina could handle anything thrown her way, even an 11 block walk up town.
Tina pointed to her new white sneakers.
Tina: I can be there and back in 20 min!
He handed her the stack of papers and sent her on her way. The walk up town was only bad Wednesday afternoons. Matinee day as they call it. Tourists bombarded the streets and stopped abruptly on every corner to take pictures of the marquis. Tina never considered herself a tourist. She was in awe of NYC but to her it felt like home. On this particular day the streets seemed almost empty and hollow. She found herself day dreaming again. Practicing her awards speech forthe Tonys. Sure she knew that was years away but it was nice to dream. She wondered if her parents would be proud of her. If all her friends would come to opening night. Would Alex come? She liked him. She knew he was gay, but hey, what man in the theatre industr wasnt? She laughed to herself. Just as she approached the box office her cell phone rang. She stole a quick glimpse at her phone and recognized the number.
Tina: Has it been 20 minuets already??
Alex: No, but close. Theres no way you are gonna make it back.
Tina: Watch me.
She loved how easily she could joke with him.
Alex: No you wont. Shall I tell you why?
Tina: Oh please do.
Alex: You will not make it back here because you are not coming back here.
Tina: Have I been fired already or does his majesty just need me to pick up another venti mocha?
Alex: Heres the deal kid, tonight is the Actors Equity benefit and James has bailed on me as my date.
Tina smiled. She thought Alex and James made the most perfect couple. Though they were polar opposites they worked. Alex had told her over drinks one night that James was supposed to be a one night stand. The joke is that he is now a 1,095 day stand. They had been together living happily for 3 years.
Alex: You still there?
Tina: Im listening.
Alex: So, now you shall be my date. What do you think?
Tina was bursting inside! She knew tonight she would mingle with the stars of the Great White Way. She knew if she screamed from the excitement Alex would make fun of her for being so naive so she covered it up.
Tina: Ok but on one condition...
Alex: Whats that?
Tina smiled to herself.
Tina: You have to promise that you wont get me drunk and try and take advantage of me.
Alex couldnt control his laughter.
Alex: Ill try but you know how hard it is for a gay man to keep his hands off a beautiful lesbian.
Tina: So now why am I not coming back to the office? What time is the party?
Alex: Not till 8 but you need a dress and to do your hair maybe paint those nails of yours.
Tina: Youre funny, you know that?
Alex: I do.
Tina hung up the phone and caught a quick glimpse of herself in the door to the theatre.
Her blonde hair tied back in tight pony tail. She knew she had to doll up tonight, after all you never who might be there.
