Bette drove along the freeway back to her house, enjoying the classical music that was coming from the car stereo. She reached to turn down the sound a bit so that she could make a call.

 

“Hi, it’s me,” Bette said into the receiver.

 

“Hey, there, how did tonight’s date go…not that well I assume since you’re already phoning me and it’s only 10pm on a Friday night…” Alice asked and answered her own question.

 

“I thought it was okay,” Bette started. “I don’t know what I’m doing. She’s really thrown me, Alice.”

 

“Did you at least kiss her goodnight tonight?” Alice asked, more for her own curiosity than anything.

 

“No,” Bette replied, furrowing her brow at what she knew would be Alice’s response.

 

“NO?” Alice demanded. “Bette, you’ve been seeing her for three weeks, she dumped her boyfriend to date you and you haven’t kissed her yet?”

 

“Well, I kissed her that day in my office and…”

 

“Okay, have you lost your mind, do you think she doesn’t want you, because it’s pretty obvious from your description of what’s gone on so far that she most definitely does. You’re the only one who doesn’t realize it.”

 

Bette took in Alice’s words and tried to rationalize her actions these past weeks.
